Actually, the problem is that you are checking data[3] , but you have only defined data[0] , data[1] , and data[2] . Try declaring the data[] array like this: BYTE data[4] = { 0xff, 0xd8, 0xff, 0xee }; and you will see that your function is correct! You still have a lot of work ahead, but you have solved this part of the problem. Please accept my answer to fight Zombie Questions, and try to accomplish as much as you can on your own before opening another question! :)
