Well, an image file is actually not a text file. But in another stackexchange answer it is stated that a BMP file is not a binary file.

So, the question is: what a binary file is? Why a BMP file is not a binary file but as far as I can imagine is even not a text file? Or I'm wrong, and even if I cannot open the BMP file with vi, gedit, less and so on (strange characters appears), it is a text file?

  • Reading a file in binary mode, and a binary file, are two different things. Read up on what the fopen modes actually mean and read your question again. Also note that a bitmap file is not a binary file because it is a bitmap file. (It is created according to the bitmap specification)
