This isn't a specific programming question, but having watched and re-watched edx lectures in weeks 6, 7 and 8, I am still completely overwhelmed and confused by pset6 "web server". I've read through the instructions and many posts about this pset but everyone seems to already understand the basic gist of it - which I don't...

I guess I'm asking if anyone has good sources / videos which I should watch to understand what is going on. I understand David Malan's lectures but the what the pset requires us to do seems to be a whole new level, almost like a completely different language to me.

My respect for programmers has never been higher than since I started cs50.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Don't look at it like a mountain and get so overwhelmed. It's just another pset, maybe a little more difficult than the previous ones.

Start from the beginning, watch all the lectures and short videos of week 8 and try to remember as much as you can, but don't sweat it. Just start the pset and read each step carefully, it's very well described what you have to do.

The basic idea of this pset is to implement a server, but the most part of it are already implemented by the staff, so you just have to learn about some more functions in C, mostly about string manipulation, to check for the validity of the requests.

Just start and get it step by step. The 50% of success is the beginning.

  • Thank you for your response, so I'll look deeper into "string" manipulation and how to check for the validity of the requests. I hadn't a clue that this was the objective, but now you've given me a better direction. Your guidance was/is greatly appreciated.

  • I'm facing the same the same problem. I don't get what needs to be done in this Pset. If you've already completed it, could you please help me out? Can you provide me the links of websites where you went to solve this Pset? Commented Aug 20, 2015 at 8:05
  • You don't need additional reading from what is taught by the lectures, the walkthroughs and the short videos. Everything you need is there. It's not that more reading will harm you or something. Just don't make it so complicated it your mind that you don't even start. Try to watch from the beginning all the videos and then start to solve the pset. You won't need anything else.
