I had to reinstall appliance50 because I wasn't able to choose preferences for gedit. I then downloaded pset8.zip and pset8.sql again and tried to load the table places into phpmyadmin. http://pset8/phpmyadmin wouldn't load with the error: "The server at pset8 can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed.". Now I'm unable to test 'import'. Can anybody help me? Thanks! Fritz

  • did you modify your /etc/hosts file according to the specs?

the answer is of course to ensure that /etc/hosts is updated per the specs. see the "Getting Started" section!

Next, in a terminal window, execute

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

in order to run gedit as the appliance’s "superuser" (aka "root") so that you can edit what’s otherwise a read-only file. Carefully add this line at the bottom of that file, which will associate pset8 with the appliance’s "loopback" address (which won’t ever change): pset8

Then save the file and quit gedit.

  • Thanks Kareem, I had been a bit beside myself. When I started to install the configuration on my Ubuntu-Laptop, I noticed the familiar IP address, checked the specs and found what I had forgotten to do in the Appliance. But the reinstall wouldn't even have been necessary. Using "sudo gedit" instead of the desktop icon would have given me command over the Preferences.
