I was able to download the VMware player but I can't change the bios settings that would allow me to open it with windows 8.1... is there an alternative program that we can use?

I don't know what the problem is, but Oracle's VirtualBox is a good alternative!– kzidane ♦Jul 11, 2014 at 5:52

I use cs50 appliance on Windows 8.1. VMware should work fine without any additional changes.– IbrahimDec 30, 2014 at 20:06

The "BIOS problem" it's just to add some features to VMware Player, you need a compatible processor to do that, but you don't need it at all in the CS50 Appliance, don't worry.
Oracle's VirtualBox was what finally worked :)

Why do you change BIOS settings? You just install VMWare Player and open the .ova file with it.
I run Appliance on Windows 8.1 x64 with no problem.
