I'm used to the development environment in visual studio. I was wondering if it would be alright if I ran the problem sets and examples in visual studio? I believe VS does support C but I'm not entirely sure.

You could use VS, but you would not be using the same dev environment, course resources, etc. as others. There are several problem sets that involve making requests to get resources (files, etc.) that must be executed from within the appliance to have proper access to the material. You would be much better off using the appliance for simplicity sake, as well as to learn to familiarize yourself with other development environments.
