Just getting started on Pset5. Downloaded and unzipped all of the files, then tried to make speller. I received two errors, one for the "unused parameter 'word' " and another for the "unused paramter 'dictionary' ". I have yet to modify any code and the instructions seem to suggest the file should compile as downloaded.

Once upon a time, it did compile. Today, not so much because all that's there are the function signatures. Since load is the first function that you'll work on, the dictionary error will cure itself when you do.

As for the error in check, for word, well, you'll need to plug something into it that will use the parameter for something. Maybe you could just print out the word for now, while you work on load? Or do something else with it that doesn't print out (it'll take a lot of time if you use a large text file for output before you finish check.)

That should get you going.

This probably comes from dictionary.c. Reread the error message; there are functions on dictionary.c which you are supposed to define (this is the problem set) so some parameters remain unused.

  • It does come from dictionary.c. The error is preventing the code from compiling, while the problem set says "Notice that we’ve implemented those four functions, but only barely, just enough for this code to compile."
