In the section Searching of this page of edx, in the last part where students recommended to check their programs by looking for number 2008, is a bug - there is no number 2008 among the numbers generated by ./generate 1000 50. It is easy to check if running ./generate 1000 50 > text.txt and then open text.txt in gedit and search for number 2008.

On the pset3 page of the cs50 itself there is another number proposed for searching. And that one works.

new edit based on chat Be sure if you are using the edX version of the pset that you download the files from the directories listed on the edX pset document. The version of generate.c being used in 2014 is different from the edX (2013) version, which will explain why different numbers are generated.

When I run ./generate 1000 50 I do indeed get 2008 as one of the numbers. It's on line 950.

Are you sure you are using the Appliance version 19_2? The current CS50 (for Fall 2014) is using an updated version of the appliance. Perhaps that seeds differently?

These are the numbers I get when I ./generate 10 50 (would be too long to show all 1000).

  • I edited my answer. 2008 is in the list so that is not a mistake. – curiouskiwi Oct 17 '14 at 6:51
  • I use 19_1. Does it make any difference? I assume it is not dependent on the OS. – user2477 Oct 17 '14 at 6:52
