I want to install VLC player on my appliance so that I can watch downloaded course videos and need to access su to do it. I entered crimson as the password and it didn't work. Anybody know what it is?

The command you are looking for is sudo, not su. Su requires the root password, which is disabled on most Linux distributions. Sudo only requires the current user's password (in this case crimson) in order to run. The reason su requires the root password is that it allows you to switch to any account on the system (including root). On the other hand, sudo allows for one command to be executed with elevated privileges and does not change who you are logged in as, meaning only your account's password is needed for verification purposes.
