  • Which commands are you trying to execute in the terminal? – Kareem Jan 23 '15 at 20:12

I found a link on askubuntu useful in this context. Do the following in your terminal in sequence:

gedit filename.extension
Ctrl + Z
bg
disown
use_terminal_as_you_wish_now

This atleast worked for me (on my host Ubuntu 14.04), not tried on appliance.

I found this answer in section from week 1: "I'm not going to be able to really do anything else in my command line until I close that gedit... So close the gedit". Thanks JASON HIRSCHHORN from Cs50

  • Probably better to open gedit from the menu rather than the command line; it won't require closing then. :) – curiouskiwi Jan 23 '15 at 20:27
