Gedit on 14.04 will not show the embedded or bottom window...Actually, it wouldn't show anything until it was updated through the terminal window..Now it show the side and middle panels but not the bottom one. Before someone answers me with a screen shot of an older Ubumbu 14.04 window let me clarify which answers are invalid.

  1. Enabling the bottom panel (cntrl+f9) IS NOT AN OPTION..It is greyed out...So,that means finding the "embedded window" option in the Edit -> Preferences ->Plugins menu IS NOT POSSIBLE..

  2. It has also been advised to enter the following

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install --reinstall gedit

(with or without a space after --)

Now this code did actually succeed in getting GEDIT to run (was not running in 14.04 previously) but DID NOT cause the bottom panel to appear or become accessible...

  1. sudo apt-get install gedit-plugins DOES not work either, this error comes back E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

  2. There was also some code similar with the previous code with a && in it

  • and are you using the vmware version or the vbox version of the appliance? I'll try to get a staff member to have a look at this.
