I have finished the basic implementation for pset7 but I can't seem to be able to insert modifications in styles.css to the web page. For example, in the end even when I copied the modifications from the staff solution.

in portfolio

<ul class="nav nav-pills">
<li> <a  etc...

in styles.css, I added,

#middle .nav
{
    /* center navigation pills */
    display: inline-block;
}

Yet the nav buttons are not centered on the page.

The same goes for the text align in the table.

Apart from that everything else seems to be formatted correctly.

Here is the complete code for portfolio,

<div style="font-weight: bold"> Welcome <?=$name?> </div>
<br/>
<br/>
<ul class="nav nav-pills">
    <li> <a href="sell.php">sell</a> </li>
    <li> <a href="buy.php">buy</a> </li>
    <li> <a href="history.php">history</a> </li>
    <li> <a href="quote.php">query</a> </li>
</ul>
<table class="table table-striped">
   <thead>
    <tr style="font-weight: bold">
       <td > symbol </td>
       <td> number of shares  </td>
       <td> price per share  </td>
       <td> total price </td>
    </tr>
 </thead>
<tbody>
<?php foreach ($positions as $position): ?>
<tr>
    <td><?= $position["symbol"] ?></td>
    <td><?= $position["shares"] ?></td>
    <td>$<?= $position["price"] ?></td>
    <td>$<?= $position["sprice"] ?> </td>
    </tr>
   <?php endforeach ?>
 </tbody>
 </table>
 <br/>
 <br/>
<br/>

<div style="font-weight: bold"> Total cash balance  </div>
<div> $<?= htmlspecialchars($cash) ?> </div>
<div style="font-weight: bold"> Total value of Stocks  </div>
<div> $<?= htmlspecialchars($totalassetprice) ?> </div>

  • shouldn't the navigation be in header.php and not in portfolio? and do you have a #middle div? I don't see it there ... perhaps that is in header?

  • So I have <div id="middle"> at the bottom of header. Putting the links in header is an interesting idea! The technical problem of course is then I have them for all of the pages including login. (I know that there is a solution to this problem!) but my focus now is on finding out what is wrong with the css files. May 8, 2015 at 7:25
  • Another point, it seems that when I look on devtools none of the changes are being updated by the browser. May 11, 2015 at 8:43

Ok I may have stumbled onto a solution for this one! I went into settings/advanced settings and pressed reset settings. Now things seem to be linking and updating correctly.
