I think I figured out how to use WINSCP.
Use the appliance IP address as the "host" and the given username: jharvard and password: crimson
And that's it! You can see your files and directories from the appliance and drag anywhere to your computer.
As the error message implies, trouble probably lies in your Internet connection. There are few possibilities of why is that so:
You physical machine has no connection to the Internet.

I had this problem. The reason was in cs50 Appliance's network settings.
I had changed all of adapters to "host-only" instead of only second adapter.
After deleting Appliance and mounting it again I changed only Adapter2 to "host-only" and it became works.

First of all check if the VM Ware Player is 64-bit compatible. The make command is for compiling C programs. You have to use mkdir for creating directories.
