If you're just trying to use the so-called CS50 appliance you don't need VMWare Workstation. Such software is a more complex piece of software designed to create and admin virtual machines. What you (probably) need is VMWare Player v6.0.4. Newest version is v7.0, but it's only offered "for Windows 64-bit operating systems".

Yes, you must open VMware Player to run any virtual machine, including the cs50 appliance. If you are looking for a Dropbox folder on your computer, outside of the virtual machine, make sure you have installed Dropbox in both places - on your computer, and inside the virtual machine - separately.

I tried the above suggested, but VMware never told me the error specifically. Oracle Virtualbox told me that the .ova file was corrupted, so I re-downloaded that file, and now the appliance works just fine.
