pset7: query function arguments

In functions.php, the query function signature is such:

function query(/* $sql [, ... ] */)

I understand that the [,...] means optional arguements but I do not get why it is surrounded by the slashes and asterisks and how the arguments are later accessed. Could anyone explain this please?

The /* ... */ is a comment.

You should insert your query string ($sql) into the query function.

It is just a comment, which reminds you that you need to insert a MySQL query there. You can find many usage examples on the pset7 description page and in walkthroughs.
