What's going on here? How can the reputation of CS50 be bad, or the "first chapters" definitely be crap?

  • In my opinion, it doesn't teach you a lot, but more or less gives you some path you can follow (on which you'll need additional resources, but at least you have some search terms now). Some of this, like implicit type conversion rules, is probably omitted to have people experience progress earlier. And much works without (if you stay in their narrow input specification), until you hit some extreme case, or different kind of input, in which case weird things happen. Those are the places where some security-relevant problems originate.
