Since I am already running Linux Unbuntu will I still need to download the Linux Appliance for this course ?

The reason why I am asking is I have limited hard drive space due to the fact I have a dual boot OS. Half of the partition is Linux Unbuntu for personal use and the other half is Windows 8 for my job.

  • How much space is limited for you? to run the cs50 appliance you need about 8GB, 10GB top, you can run it in under any of the OS you have, either on Ubuntu or Windows. For info about not using the appliance you can search for questions like this, or others that already are in this site.

  • Ok thank you. Since I have only 2.5 GB free I will just do the problem sets under my current Linux unbuntu system. It won't be a problem for me because I am an experienced programmer with 17 years of experience. I could be wrong but the appliance seems to be designed for people that are just getting started in the world of programming and have no unix/linux experience. Commented Feb 21, 2015 at 14:38
  • The appliance is so that everyone taking the class can operate using the same environment. You can install the packages and libraries needed to code and compile the psets up to the class standard. Commented Feb 21, 2015 at 18:17
  • Thanks Rutgers. I downloaded check50 and I use that to make sure it is up to CS50 standards before submitting. Commented Feb 23, 2015 at 3:21
