I'm using a Mac and MVFusion and have downloaded the Appliance as instructed, but it seems there is no CS50 file on it. I also tried to update it a few times, but to no effect.

Any help?

Thanks.

  • Which CS50 file do you wish to find there for now? The files required for psets should be downloaded later when you are doing the pset.

  • Try changing directories using cd, it could be possible that there is nothing in your current directory, or the files are hidden, use ls -a.

I suspect that you are looking for the cs50 directory, not the file. The directory structure here is different than you would expect on Windows, and probably different from a Mac (I don't know about Macs.) If you enter the cd command, it will take you to the user's home directory. This is not the root directory. There are actually two more levels above this. If you enter the following commands in order,

cd
cd ..
cd ..

it will take you first to your (jharvard's) home directory. The second one will take you to /home which contains all of the home directories for all users, and then the last one will take you to the / root directory.

Take some time to look around in these directories to see what is where with the ls -a -l command. You will need to have a basic understanding of this directory structure in later lessons.

But to answer your question, the cs50 directory is in the /home directory. It's fully qualified path name is /home/cs50. You could also have run the following command: cd /home/cs50 or even cd ~cs50. The ~ will substitute for the local system's directory for user home directories.
