This apparently works in the lecture, whatever you put into vhosts/localhost/public can be accessed outside of the appliance in chrome.
That doesn't work for me. When I put localhost in the address bar, I get a pop-up that says I can't go there. Why? I used chmod. I feel as if I made a very simple mistake, but I just don't know what that mistake is.

I don't think you should be able to do this. Professor has probably configured his pc to be able to do this. Maybe something along these lines: stackoverflow.com/questions/11245242/… . localhost refers to this computer. the appliance is virtually a different computer than your actual computer. this means that localhost outside of the appliance does not refer to the appliance.
in order to refer to the appliance from another computer on the same local network (e.g., your actual computer), you can use the appliance's IP address (can be found near the bottom-right corner in the appliance). see the red rectangle in the screenshot below for an example:
(note: the IP may look a little different from the one in the screenshot on your appliance)
