I have an expired VMware Fusion license from last year. Can I get a new license? Do I have to pay for one?

  • Hi there, I'm having the same issue. Apparently you can apply for another VMAP to get a username and password to extend your licence. All the information is here: manual.cs50.net/appliance/19/fusion - Good luck! Commented Jan 27, 2016 at 7:06

Maybe you had downloaded a trial copy of "VMware Workstation"? The WMware Player software doesn't expire.

  • There's only vmWare fusion available for mac which is not free. cs50 gives it's students a 1-year license to use vmware fusion 6.0, I think that's the case here.

You can run the CS50 Appliance in VirtualBox, a competitor to VMware. VirtualBox is Free Software, so you don't have to play silly games with license keys or limited trial versions.

I completely agree with Roberto. The normal VMWare Player is a non-commercial patented product. It comes absolutely free and won't prompt you to buy a license as long as you use it. But if you have downloaded the VMWare Workstation then you will have to pay for it, as it's a commercial version of VMWare with loads of new features useful for commercial/workstation usage.
