I was able to download the VMware player but I can't change the bios settings that would allow me to open it with windows 8.1... is there an alternative program that we can use?

The "BIOS problem" it's just to add some features to VMware Player, you need a compatible processor to do that, but you don't need it at all in the CS50 Appliance, don't worry.
Oracle's VirtualBox was what finally worked :)

Why do you change BIOS settings? You just install VMWare Player and open the .ova file with it.
I run Appliance on Windows 8.1 x64 with no problem.
